Course 1) Fiber Lasers and Applications (September 14, 9am - 1pm)
Speakers: Dr. B.N. Upadhyay, Dr. M.R. Shenoy
Outline: Introduction to fiber lasers, laser basics, CW and pulsed lasers, Optical fibers and rare earth doped fibers, Yb and Er doped fiber lasers, Fiber laser components, Mode-locking of fiber lasers, High power CW fiber lasers, applications of fiber lasers.
About the Course: Recent advances in fiber lasers have led to the development of optical sources in a wide range of wavelengths with excellent performance in terms of efficiency, beam quality and output power. Fiber lasers now form invaluable tool in various applications - ranging from material processing, military, metrology, and healthcare. This course is intended to provide an introduction to fiber lasers, starting from the basic principle of operation and design considerations, which will be followed by discussion on some laser systems, including high-power fiber lasers. Applications of fiber lasers in some of the areas will also be discussed.
Course 2) Nanophotonics (September 14, 2pm - 6pm)

About the Course: Nanophotonics is the branch in which behavior of light with nanometer sized/structured materials are studied for various potential applications and in some cases new phenomenon are observed. This short courses covers the basic topics leading to the basic understanding and physical phenomena nanophotonics. Topics covered are: Basic properties of EM waves, Light matter interaction in macro, micro and nanostructures, Plasmonics, Optical properties of surface plasmons and localized surface plasmons, Quantum dots, nano-structured materials, Photonic crystals, metamaterials, Fabrication of photonic structures & metamaterials, Some applications, etc.
Course 3) Optical Fiber and Waveguides (September 15, 9am - 1pm)

About the Course: An optical waveguide is a spatially inhomogeneous structure for guiding light, i.e. for restricting the spatial region in which light can propagate. Usually, a waveguide contains a region of increased refractive index, compared with the surrounding medium (called cladding). However, guidance is also possible, e.g., by the use of reflections, e.g. at metallic interfaces. Some waveguides also involve plasmonic effects at metals. Most waveguides exhibit two-dimensional guidance, thus restricting the extension of guided light in two dimensions and permitting propagation essentially only in one dimension. The most important type of two-dimensional waveguide is the optical fiber. There are also one-dimensional waveguides, often called Planar waveguides. This course covers broad range of topics such as modal analysis in step index and graded index optical fiber, Spot size and offset losses calculation using various methods, attenuation, dispersion measurement for various refractive index profiles, modal analysis in multilayer symmetric and asymmetric planar waveguides, design of directional coupler using planar waveguides, Fiber optic link design etc.
